Three distinct techniques, applied in the right sequence, saved a Burbank tree before Santa Ana season.

I've been on jobs where a homeowner pointed at a tree and said, "Just cut it back." I knew what they meant. The branches were hitting the roofline. There was a deadwood problem on one side. But what they were describing required three different techniques applied in the right sequence.

Crown thinning, selectively removing interior branches to reduce wind resistance and improve light penetration without changing the overall shape, was the right call for the interior of that canopy. Crown reduction, cutting the outer canopy back to reduce the tree's overall size while preserving its natural form, addressed the roofline problem on the south side. Canopy lifting, which means removing lower branches to raise the clearance height, handled the fence clearance issue on the east side.

That job was on a property in Burbank, just before a Santa Ana wind event, the seasonal hot, dry, powerful wind conditions in Southern California that turn a poorly maintained tree into a liability overnight. The homeowner called us because a neighbor had lost a large branch through a patio cover the previous season. For properties in overgrown conditions near structures, proper crown work is also a critical component of fire-safe landscaping and defensible space planning.

We did the diagnostic walk with the homeowner before we touched anything. We identified three distinct structural issues. We explained what each cut would accomplish and why. Then we executed in the right order.

When the Santa Ana advisory went out four days later, that tree moved the way a healthy tree should. Nothing came down. The homeowner texted us a photo of it the next morning.

Why Crown Reduction Outperforms Topping Every Time

Tree topping, cutting main branches back to stubs, is one of the most common requests we receive. We always explain why crown reduction is the better path before any work begins.

Here's what most homeowners don't know about topping: it triggers rapid, weakly attached regrowth called epicormic shoots. Those new branches grow fast, but they're structurally unstable. Within two to three years, a topped tree is often more hazardous than before the cut, and significantly harder to manage. Following International Society of Arboriculture standards is precisely why we never recommend topping as a solution.

Implementation

Work begins with the highest-priority cuts first, safety and structural issues before aesthetic work. Our crews use proper pruning cuts at the correct angle to seal efficiently and reduce disease entry. Palm skinning, the removal of old dried frond bases from the trunk, is done by hand, not by pulling or tearing, which damages the trunk tissue.

Debris is chipped or bundled as we work. The job site stays clean throughout, not just at the end.

Post-Service Walk

Before we leave, we walk the property with the homeowner. We point out what was done, explain any follow-up care the tree may need, and flag anything we noticed during the job that may warrant attention later. That final conversation is part of the service. If the scope of work leaves behind bare ground, mulched areas, or cleared sections of the yard, we can also coordinate seasonal yard cleanup and debris removal to bring the full property back to a finished condition.
