I walked a backyard in Pasadena last spring. The homeowners had already poured a concrete patio. A contractor came, poured it, and left. No drainage plan. No grade consideration. The first real rain of the season sent standing water directly toward the foundation.
They called us to fix it. What we found was a surface installed without any thought to where the water goes. In LA, we get intense rainfall in short windows during winter months. Compact, clay-heavy soil, which dominates most of Pasadena and the foothill neighborhoods, doesn't absorb that water quickly. You have to design for it.
We pulled the existing concrete. We regraded the subbase, installed a French drain channel along the low edge, and rebuilt the patio with permeable pavers, paving units designed to allow water to pass through the joints into a gravel base below. We also tied the drainage into a dry creek bed that runs toward the back fence, which doubled as a landscape feature.
The homeowners got the patio they originally wanted. They also got a yard that functions in the rain, not just in the sun. Pasadena gets about 20 inches of annual rainfall, concentrated in a few months. That's not a detail you can ignore at installation and fix later without tearing everything out.
