A client in Pasadena called us after her third round of replacing the same plants around her pool. She'd chosen them from a garden center, they looked great in the pot. Twelve months later, every single one was dead or struggling. The issue wasn't the plants themselves. It was placement.

Her pool deck faced southwest with almost no shade. The paving stones reflected intense afternoon heat directly onto the planting beds. She'd chosen plants that performed well in standard garden conditions. Poolside conditions in Pasadena in July are not standard. Deck surface temperatures there regularly exceed 130°F. Splash zone exposure, where chlorinated water hits leaves and roots intermittently, had burned the foliage of two species that would otherwise thrive in that neighborhood.

We started with a site read, not a plant catalog. We mapped her sun orientation, measured the reflectivity zone off the pavers, and identified which beds took the most splash from pool entry. From there we built a plant list based on what that specific environment demanded: drought-tolerant species that handle intense reflected heat, selected for minimal leaf and petal drop into the water. Non-clogging plant species, plants chosen specifically to minimize leaf, pod, or petal drop into the pool, are a hard requirement near the water's edge.

We also addressed privacy. Her neighbors had a second-floor view directly into the pool area. We installed an Italian Cypress screen on the north side, fast-growing, narrow footprint, no meaningful debris contribution to the pool. Six months later, the planting was establishing well and her filter maintenance had dropped noticeably. One site read. One correct plant list. No fourth round of replacements.

Splash zone plant selection, choosing species that tolerate intermittent chlorinated water contact without leaf burn or root damage, is one of the most consequential factors in pool area landscaping. Reading the Site Before Anything Else

We read the pool environment before selecting a single plant. This includes deck surface material and heat reflectivity, sun orientation and shade windows throughout the day, splash exposure zones by pool use pattern, existing drainage paths, and sightlines that need privacy screening. For hillside pools, common in Pasadena, Rancho Palos Verdes, and Rolling Hills Estates, we also assess slope drainage above the pool area.

Installation Sequenced From Structure to Softscape

Installation follows a sequenced approach. Shade structures and larger screening elements go in first, since they anchor the design. Our pool deck and patio hardscape installation work, edge softening, bed borders, any pathway additions connecting the pool to the main yard, comes next. Planting follows in order from largest to smallest, with drip irrigation set to each species' actual water requirement. We use a drip-first approach near pool decks to keep water delivery below the hardscape surface and away from the pool water.

Walkthrough and Verification Before We Leave

Before we leave, we run the irrigation through a full cycle, check each zone for even delivery, and walk the full perimeter with the homeowner. We confirm that no plant material overhangs the water line and that the privacy screening achieves the sightline coverage we designed for. If anything needs adjustment in the first 30 days, we come back.
